5 Ways to Defeat Anxiety!

5 Ways to Defeat Anxiety Spiritually + Practically (HeyThriveGirl Feature)

By Asa Dugger

When anxiety attacks, our nerves tremble in fear and it seems as if every empowering quote and scripture is being held hostage in our minds. Somehow at the moment, we can’t think, pray or articulate what we’re feeling. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 1 in 13 people globally suffers from anxiety. Anxiety is a silent war majority of us wrestle with, but for some reason, most of us never have the courage to stand up and FIGHT BACK. Ask yourself, “How often have I actually prayed + worked towards defeating my anxiety?” We don’t think about it because it seems impossible. Truth is, it is impossible IF we attempt to do it on our own strength, sis we need God! So here are 5 Ways to Defeat Anxiety Spiritually & Practically:

  1. KNOW THE FACTS. “First of all, what is anxiety?” Anxiety is an overwhelming feeling of fear, worry, and panic. Almost anything can trigger anxiety. If you’re asking yourself, “why am I going through this?” I’d suggest you talk to God and ask Him to reveal to you the root of your anxiety. No matter how hard we try, we can’t fight this battle on our own- we need Him. Take a look at these scriptures as food for thought.

“FOR OUR STRUGGLE IS NOT AGAINST FLESH AND BLOOD, BUT AGAINST THE RULERS, AGAINST THE AUTHORITIES, AGAINST THE POWERS OF THIS DARK WORLD AND AGAINST THE SPIRITUAL FORCES OF EVIL IN THE HEAVENLY REALMS.”

    EPHESIANS 6:12 NIV

“BE ALERT AND OF SOBER MIND. YOUR ENEMY THE DEVIL PROWLS AROUND LIKE A ROARING LION LOOKING FOR SOMEONE TO DEVOUR.”

    1 PETER 5:8 NIV

  2. IDENTIFY TRIGGERS- Triggers can be anything that can cause you to go into an anxiety attack. Yes, these triggers can be self-afflicting and the perfect place for the Enemy hide. Is it your Grande Columbian Coffee from Starbucks? Multitasking? Loud music? Fear of the unknown? Ask yourself “What is the root of my anxiety? What are the triggers?” then ask God to clarify what is working against you and how to fight back.

  3. BE REAL WITH YOURSELF. In the Christian community- mental health disorders like anxiety are swiped under the rug. We don’t talk about it, acknowledge it and if we do- we get the brushed off “just pray about it” or “you’re possessed!” response. Truth is we have to do more than pray about it- God wants us to be about it. Prayer is POWERFUL- in additional God wants us to put in work! James 2:26 “For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.” (NKJV) Acknowledge that it’s real, that it’s something you’re dealing with and armor up with the Word of God, counseling, and resources. Besides, God provided us with the fruits of counselors and resources because He knew we’d need it. And let me just say this, we as believers have to stop giving weak, obvious advice to hurting people! Feed them the Word and resources too!

  4. USE YOUR AMMUNITION- Get your mind back sis! Like Mali Music says in his song “Ready, Aim, FIRE!” Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.” Ephesians 6:13 NIV. Create strategies to fight back, here are a few of my personal ones I created and memorized:

The Power of Acknowledgement: I am having an anxiety attack. I belong to the Lord Jesus Christ. No weapon formed against me shall prosper. I rebuke the spirit of anxiety, depression & fear in the Name of Jesus! I will overcome.

Say a scripture out loud- over and over! The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? Psalms 27:1 (KJV)

Have a Warrior Friend on Speed-Dial: Just like in a real war, have allies ready for battle! Gather a few friends and share what you’re all going through and pray for each other as you feel attacked. Call each other to pray fervently in the very moment you’re feeling attacked. “For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them.” Matthew 18:20 NKJV and if God is in the midst! Anxiety will flee- BELIEVE THAT.

  5. PRAYER & PERSEVERANCE.  Be steadfast in prayer and perseverance. When you’re feeling anxious- stop what you’re doing and fight back! Be relentless in your battle. Take back everything the Enemy stole! Remember, the enemy only attacks what’s valuable and God says you’re priceless according the Word of God.

“Since you are precious and honored in my sight, and because I love you, I will give people in exchange for you, nations in exchange for your life.”

— ISAIAH 43:3 NIV
